Driving Courses: Mike's School of Motoring: Serving Perthshire
There are a number of different driving courses that are available to complete, all of which go far to suit your individual driving style. Here we give you the lowdown on different courses available with Mike's School of Motoring:
HOURLY TUITION
If you beginning to learn to drive then
the most common type of driving course to take is hourly tuition, where you have
just one or two hourly lessons per week. You take your theory and practical
tests at a time when you and your instructor agree you are ready, usually after
a few months of lessons. There is no fixed time scale for learning to drive with
this option; we go at your own pace. If it is your preferred method for taking
lessons then there are discounts available for block bookings.
SEMI INTENSIVE COURSE
This type of course is probably
the best way of learning to drive, as you can fit your course into the shortest
time that a waiting list allows without the disadvantages that a 1 or 2 week
intensive course has (such as getting tired through spending long hours in the
car). You are also under less pressure as you have more time to complete your
course. You eliminate the disadvantages of hourly lessons, such as lack of
continuity and feeling 'out of practice', because you are driving with an
increased level of regularity. The course is flexible, and depending on how you
are progressing, the intensity of your course can be increased or decreased. The
duration of your course will depend on a few situations, such as whether you
have already passed the theory test, the availability of appointments, how many
hours of tuition are needed and your availability for lessons.
TEST BOOSTER COURSE
Designed for pupils that are close
to test standard and need a short burst of driving lessons prior to their
driving test. The test booster course is also ideal for those who may have
previously failed a driving test and haven't had any lessons since.
PASS PLUS
Pass plus is a training scheme for newly
qualified drivers that is usually taken within the first year of passing the
driving test. The course was compiled by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) in
conjunction with Insurance Companies and Driving Instructors, and was introduced
to try to address the high accident risk of new drivers. The course is designed
to give newly qualified drivers extra skill or experience in situations that
they may not have covered in depth whilst preparing for their driving test (in
the case of Motorway driving, not covered at all). Pass Plus is a course
consisting of 6 Modules with no test or exam. Instead, you are assessed by your
driving instructor during the training sessions and marked as either 'achieved
the standard' or 'exceeded the standard'. You do not fail any module, but if
necessary extra training would bring the standard up to the required level.
Pass Plus syllabus modules:
- Introduction and Town Driving
- All Weather Driving
- Out of Town and Rural Roads
- Night Driving
- Dual Carriageways
- Motorways
In return for completing the Pass Plus course many Insurance Companies will give a discount, usually equivalent to 1 Years No Claims Bonus (approx. 30%), and this more than covers the cost of the course. In some cases, The Local Council may also pay for part of this course.
REFRESHER LESSONS
Refresher lessons are available for
both learner and qualified drivers and could be a solution if:
- You have not driven for some time
- The type of driving you need to do has changed
- You have moved to a busier area
- You need to drive longer distances
- You want to improve one aspect of your driving
- You would like to update your skills.
Everyone has a different reason and will require something different from refresher lessons. The scope of the lessons can be decided jointly by the client and the Instructor, and any aspect of driving can be included. Lessons can be 1, 1.5 or 2 Hours, however we do recommend that the longer the lesson, the more effective they will be.
MOTORWAY TUITION
Motorway driving is different from
urban driving. Speeds are obviously much higher and stopping distances are much
longer; the little 'dot' you see in your mirrors can sometimes catch you in
seconds. Driving skills developed on different road types need to be adapted for
the changed environment, as there are new things to learn and skills to develop.
A motorway lesson would obviously be of benefit to a recently qualified driver,
but we also give tuition and coaching to more experienced drivers who may lack
confidence or perhaps just want to hone their skills further in order to ‘do it
right’.
CONFIDENCE BUILDING COURSES
Do you feel that you lack
confidence behind the wheel? Maybe parking causes you sleepless nights, or the
thought of driving on the motorway makes you sweat? Then this short course is
for you, regardless of how long you have driven for. Tell us what you need and
Mike's School of Motoring will do the rest.
DRIVER IMPROVEMENT COURSES
This is a short course
offering you the opportunity to enhance your skills. It can include defensive
driving - learn how to avoid those situations that cause you to become stressed
while driving, hazard perception - identify the problem areas well in advance
and become a more relaxed driver. And much more.
